European Union Military Staff (EUMS) and NATO International Military Staff (IMS) representatives convened last Friday, 05 December 2014, at the EU Military Staff Headquarters in Brussels for their third meeting of 2014.
At his presentation to the Institute for International and European Affairs in Dublin recently, on the subject of 'New Challenges for CSDP – A Military Perspective, Lt General Wolfgang WOSOLSOBE addressed the complex security challenges facing the EU from the perspective of the EU Military Staff.
On 30 October 2014, the EU Military Staff and Joint Multinational Headquarters, Ulm, Germany, co-organised the second EU Annual Seminar on Military Training and Education, which this year focused on "Developing individual and collective competencies for planning CSDP missions and operations".
Lieutenant General Wolfgang WOSOLSOBE assumed the responsibilities of Director General of the EU Military Staff, Brussels, on Tuesday the 28 May 2013.
In brief, Lieutenant General WOSOLSOBE was born in 1955 and commenced his military career in 1974 at the Theresianische Militärakademie” in Wiener Neustadt, Austria and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in 1977. In 1987 and 1988, fully trained as an Austrian General Staff Officer, he joined the French “École Supérieure de Guerre Interarmées” and the “Cours Supérieur Interarmées” which offered him the full range of joint staff training.
In 1991, he joined the Austrian Diplomatic Mission in Geneva as a Military Advisor for Disarmament. His international career continued with the assignment as Defence Attaché (colonel) to France, from 1992 to 1997. A command period with the Austrian Special Forces followed.
He was promoted to Brigadier General in 2001. During the following 6 years, he contributed to shaping the international posture of the Austrian Armed forces. During the defence reform process, conducted during this period, he largely contributed to the adaptation of Austria’s defence policy to new realities, particularly to European Security Defence Policy.
This laid the groundwork for his appointment as Defence Policy Director during the Austrian presidency of the EU-Council in 2006. From there, he joined Brussels as Military Representative in 2007, and was promoted to Major General in June of the same year.
During his period as Military Representative, he served as Dean of the EU Military Committee in 2009 and 2010. In 2012, he was elected to the post of Director General of the EU Military Staff.
The EU Military Staff being a fully integrated part of the European External Action Service, Lieutenant General WOSOLSOBE intends to continue and deepen EU Military Staff interaction with the wider community dealing with the comprehensive approach, thus supporting the High Representative and the Chairman of the EU Military Committee.
Recently he said, “All stakeholders of Common Security Defence Policy are indispensable partners in this effort, alongside with the European Defence Agency (EDA). We also play our role in bringing the military dimension into a broad range of partnerships, with States and organizations…Our wide range of external partnerships offer a whole spectrum of opportunities, in terms of experience, cooperation and contributions. The EU Military Staff contributes to their further development”.
He adds: The EU Military Staff offers a wide range of experience, drawn from all services of the Member Stares' military. This is an unique opportunity to add value.
