The European Union Special Representative in Afghanistan and Office of the Delegation of the European Union to Afghanistan
The Office of the Special Representative of the European Union for Afghanistan was established in December 2001 and has been based in Kabul since January 2002. From July 2002 to July 2008 the position as EU Special Representative in Afghanistan (EUSR) was held by Mr. Francesc Vendrell. Following the departure of Mr. Vendrell, Ambassador Ettore Francesco Sequi's took office. His term of appointment ended on 1 April 2010. He was followed by Ambassador Vygaudas Ušackas who served as the European Union Special Representative in Afghanistan as well as the Head of Delegation of the European Union to Afghanistan until 1 September 2013. Currently Ambassador Franz-Michael Skjold Mellbin is holding both these positions.
The EU supports the transition in Afghanistan through a comprehensive approach covering political, security and development support. The key objectives for the EUSR are to contribute to the strengthening of democracy, rule of law, governance and capacity building, economic prosperity and human rights in Afghanistan.
