European Week 2012: Brasília May 5th - 20th 2012 (02/05/2012)

Event includes cinema, sports, poetry, music, a seminar, and gastronomy, in the name of sustainability

From May 5th to 20th, Brasília will host an extensive cultural, sportive and gastronomic program organized by the Cultural Association of the European Countries (EUNIC) and the European Union’s member countries, which every year promote the EUROPEAN WEEK. Brazil’s capital city hosts the eighth edition of the event this year, with a film festival, sport matches, lectures, seminars, concerts, recitals, and the traditional bazaar, as well as a homage to writer Vaclav Havel, former president of the Czech Republic. The celebrations will extend to Rio de Janeiro, which will receive the European Film Festival for the first time. The 8th EUROPEAN WEEK calls for a global effort FOR A SUSTAINABLE WORLD. This theme will pervade all activities. The complete program is available at www.semanadaeuropa.org.br.

THE EUROPEAN WEEK was first organized in 2005 for the purpose of celebrating Europe Day, 9 May 1950. The date was conceived after French statesman Robert Schuman proposed the creation of a supranational European entity. The proposal, known as the Schuman Declaration, is considered the embryo of the current European Union. Europe Day or European Union Day is celebrated every year to recall that event.

The rotating Presidency of the European Union during the first half of 2012 is being held by Denmark, which upholds the union of strengths, cooperation among the European countries; EUROPEAN WEEK is part of that effort.

The event is being implemented by EUNIC Brazil, together with the German Embassy, Goethe-Zentrum Brasília, Austrian Embassy, Belgian Embassy, British Council, Cultura Inglesa, Croatian Embassy, Danish Embassy, Cultural Institute of Denmark, Slovakian Embassy, Spanish Embassy, Instituto Cervantes, Finish Embassy, French Embassy, Alliance Française, Dutch Embassy, Irish Embassy, Italian Embassy, Polish Embassy, Portuguese Embassy, Instituto Camões, Czech Embassy, and Swedish Embassy and sponsored by the Delegation of the European Union and TAP.

They are unique works in which the subjects express pain, happiness, moods, dreams, and the whole range of complexity of human feelings, whether Asian, European, American, African, or even Brazilian. Biser shows grotesque figures whose interior beauty and richness of color are clearly perceived. Their traits reflect life in the circus, in children games and the theatre.  This playfulness merges with their pain under the deep and penetrating vision of the artist. Biser’s works invite spectators to find fantasies and dreams within themselves.   “Knowing how to look is universal”, says the artist.

Biser Naydenov Hristov was born in Sofia and graduated from the Fine Arts Academy in his native city. His broad artistic experience has been recognized by important international art galleries. His has been jury member in various Art Biennials and international expositions and visiting professor at the universities of Oslo (Norway), Barcelona (Spain), Montreal (Canada) and Havana (Cuba), among others. His works are part of the collections of diverse governmental and non-governmental institutions throughout the world, such as the Musée des Beaux Arts de Montreal, Canada; Vatican, Italy; National Gallery of Oslo, Norway; the White House, Washington-DC, USA; and Prince Philip’s collection at Buckingham Palace, England, UK.
