Freedom of expression is a fundamental right for the fulfilment of human aspirations. The European Union is committed to respecting and defending freedom and pluralism of media throughout the world.

Strong media are instrumental to a more informed and democratic society. I am convinced that media's strength rests on credibility and reputation that are built on high standards of professionalism and journalism ethics.

In 2011, Georgia's ranking in an annual survey of global press freedom by Freedom House has improved for the third consecutive year, nevertheless there is still room for improvement.

The EU Prize for Journalism gives us the chance to pay a deserved tribute to those who work for a free and responsible press.
