European Parliamentarians on a visit to strengthen ties with its Indian Partners (30/04/2012)
30 April 2012, New Delhi - A European Parliament (EP) Delegation for relations with India is on a 5 day visit to India - Delhi & Chennai - from the 30th April to 4th May 2012. The aim of the visit is to further enhance ties between India and the European Union.
This 13 member delegation, chaired by Sir Graham Watson will exchange views on global issues such as security, climate change & energy as well as work towards deepening relationship between the two players.
Their Delhi leg entails meetings in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including with Mr Shanta Kumar, Chairperson, Standing Committee on Commerce (Rajya Sabha) and with Mr Anath Kumar, Chairperson, Standing Committee on External Affairs (Lok Sabha). They will have discussions with the FICCI Forum of Parliamentarians as well. In addition, the team will interact with experts and academics to discuss trade and economic relations, social issues etc.
The EP Delegation will also meet with Mrs Preneet Kaur, Minister of State for External Affairs, Government of India to exchange views for further strengthening of EU-India strategic partnership.
Moving from New Delhi to Chennai, they will interact with political leaders of Tamil Nadu and representatives of civil society. The European parliamentarians will also have a roundtable discussion with the Director of Indian Institute of Technology (Chennai) on the topic of co-operation with the EU in the area of research and innovation.
Furthermore they will meet with the representatives of NGOs working on EU projects in Tamil Nadu and the last segment of their rich programme includes visit to the Nokia factory.
