EU reaffirms commitment to assist vulnerable communities across Jamaica

The European Union has given its commitment to continue support to vulnerable communities across Jamaica. Speaking at the launch of the 'Jamaica Exporters' Association and the St. Andrew Settlement Income Generating Opportunities for Unemployed Young People Through Linkages with Established MSMEs in Majesty Gardens' on May 14th, 2013, "Chargé d' Affaires of the EU Delegation in Jamaica Jesús, Orús Báguena said the focus on vulnerable communities remains key especially given the challenge with unemployment.

Agualta Vale roundabout renamed Robert Schuman roundabout for EU Day

The Agualta Vale roundabout in St. Mary was today (Thursday, May 9) officially renamed the Schuman roundabout in honour of Robert Schuman, one of the founding fathers of the European Union. The roundabout is the starting point of the section of the North Coast Highway which received JMD$10 billion (calculated at the current exchange rate) in funding from the European Union. The remaining twenty five percent of the cost was funded by the Government of Jamaica. The road which is approximately 96 kilometres in length is the section of the Northern Coastal Highway between Ocho Rios and Port Antonio and links the parishes of St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland, parishes which are all critical to the island's tourism sector.

EU funds weather station to help protect Cayman from natural disasters

The Cayman Islands is now better prepared to deal with natural disasters, thanks to the recent commissioning of a Digital Early Warning System station in that country. The station completes and complements a European Union regional programme which has already allowed the construction of radar stations in Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Belize. The objective being to improve the early weather warning system for the people of the Cayman Islands and by extension the Caribbean, thereby reducing the loss of life and property.

The Goodwin Park Hostel in Kingston will benefit from much needed infrastructural rehabilitation under the European Union's Poverty Reduction Programme (PRP II). The home which houses male wards of the state between ages 10 and 18 is part of the possibility programme which was established in 2001 to address the physical, social and emotional needs of at risk youth.

The European Union, through the European Commission and its Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO), expresses its solidarity with the victims of Hurricane Ernesto in Belize. As a major contributor to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Commission has agreed to use 32,335 EUR of its DREF contribution to help bring relief to the victims.

The Delegation of the European Union to Jamaica has extended much needed help to the Mt. St. Joseph Preparatory School in Mandeville. The donation of 10 computers was this morning handed over to the school by EU Ambassador Paola Amadei, following a tour of the institution which was badly damaged by fire two months ago. EU Delegation Staff also donated books from their personal collections to the school's library.

The European Commission is seeking the views of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other stakeholders on the future policy of the EU with regard to support to CSOs in partner countries in the field of development cooperation. This policy will be announced later in 2012. CSOs are therefore invited to respond to the questions in this consultation paper. We are particularly seeking contributions from local CSOs in Jamaica.
