High level EU mission to Kenya and Somalia (28/03/2012)

The European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Alexander Rondos, the Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service, Nick Westcott, and the Managing Director for Crisis Response at the European External Action Service, Agostino Miozzo, held a joint press conference on the 28th of March 2012 regarding their mission to Kenya and Somalia.
The high level EU delegates underlined the EU's wish to further strengthen the relations between the EU and the Government of Kenya. They told the press they would discuss, with the Kenyan authorities, the domestic situation and the preparation of the elections, but also the EU's concern about the tone of the political debate.
The European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Alexander Rondos, reminded the media the EU is the largest donor to Somalia with more than one billion Euros (2008-2013). He cautioned that the EU will not simply sit and wait, and that there are clear expectations regarding the implementation of the Roadmap towards the ending of the transition. The EU calls on all Somalis to build a new Somalia by putting in place a new Constitution and a stable political structure through an inclusive process representative of all Somali communities.
