European Commission Supports Public Procurement Reform in Kosovo (06/12/2011)

In order to make known the significance of new legislative developments on public procurement, a conference was held in Prishtina, 6 December 2011. The focus of the conference was the benefits of the new public procurement law, in force since 5 October 2011.

The new legislation is a building block for an effective public procurement system which promotes efficiency and effectiveness in the use of scarce public funds. The new law introduces legislative provisions which modernise and facilitate efficient procurement. It aims to increase transparency, equal treatment and proportional use of resources. Effective and precisely funded projects and services will improve the quality of life for the community.

Consequently, a well organised and efficient public procurement system is an important factor in stimulating development and growth. In the long term it will help Kosovo towards economic and political stability. Improving the public procurement process in Kosovo ultimately paves the way for the fight against corruption.

The EU has been assisting public procurement reform in Kosovo since 2001 and is committed to continue supporting the establishment of modern and transparent public procurement system in Kosovo. A correct development of the public procurement sector is of key importance in the process of Kosovo's alignment to EU standards.
