Statement by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the formation of a new government in Lebanon (26/01/2011)
Catherine Ashton, the EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, made today the following statement:
“President Sleiman has tasked Mr. Najib Mikati to form a new government in Lebanon. I trust that the formation of the government will take place in full compliance with the constitution. The Prime Minister designate should seek the broadest possible consensus in forming his government, which is in the interest of the Lebanese people. I expect that the new government will continue to respect Lebanon's international obligations. I am concerned about the violent protests which have erupted and call on all parties to show restraint. All parties should cooperate in a spirit of dialogue. I want to assure the Lebanese population that the EU will continue to support a sovereign, independent, democratic and stable Lebanon.”
