European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights – Call for proposals for Lebanon (17/06/2011)
The Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon announces the launching of its call for proposals for the funding of projects aimed at "Strengthening the role of civil society in promoting human rights and democratic reform" with financial assistance from the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR). This instrument aims to contribute to the development and consolidation of democracy and the rule of law and respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms. It is designed to help civil society to become an effective force for political reform and defence of human rights.
The projects to be selected should address issues in line with at least one of the following priorities:
- Encourage the Lebanese authorities to fulfil their commitments in the field of human rights in the context of the European Neighbourhood Policy and the UN instruments (including follow up of the Universal Periodic Review for Lebanon ) through advocacy, reporting, monitoring and awareness rising.
- Support to strengthen the legal and social protection of vulnerable and marginalised groups by providing social and legal assistance, support to improve the documentation of human rights violations of these groups, the process of accountability of abuses, the development of strategic case law and the promotion of education based on human rights for all.
- Support to advocate for the abolition of death penalty and all other forms of physical punishment
- Support to improve the transparency and accountability in the public sector including improving access to information, access to public participation and access to justice.
The grants awarded under this call must fall between the minimum amount of €50.000 and maximum amount of €250.000. Partnership is mandatory and there has to be at least one organisation of Lebanese nationality (applicant or partner).
