To address the presence of illegal timber in global markets and stop it from entering the European market, the European Union adopted the European Union (EU) Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan in 2003.

The European Union is supporting a global network of FLEGT-related technical assistance to implement the Action Plan. Part of this network is the EU-FAO Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Programme (EU FAO FLEGT Programme). This programme provides support to timber producing countries to implement projects that target aspects of the EU FLEGT Action Plan.

The European Commission has today announced the final and biggest ever set of calls for proposals for research under its Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). In total, €8.1 billion will support projects and ideas that will boost Europe's competitiveness and tackle issues such as human health, protecting the environment and finding new solutions to growing challenges linked to urbanisation and managing waste. The funding – which is open to organisations and businesses in all EU Member States and partner countries - makes up the lion's share of the EU's proposed €10.8 billion research budget for 2013. This announcement comes just days after EU leaders emphasised the importance of research and innovation in the Compact for Growth and Jobs.

Aid for Trade to developing countries: EU maintains its leader position

The EU and its Member States have once again been confirmed as the largest provider of Aid for Trade in the world, despite the current economic crisis, according to a new monitoring report presented by the European Commission today. In fact, the EU accounted for around a third of total worldwide Aid for Trade in 2010; maintaining the all-time high registered the year before and totalling some €10.7 billion committed.

The course on Economic Issues in Regional Integration organised by the IMF’s Institute for Capacity Development (ICD) and the Regional Multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence (RMCE) took place from 18 to 29 June in Port Louis, Mauritius. The course's overall objective was to broaden the participants understanding of various aspects of economic and monetary integration.

The results of the 2012 Eurobarometer public opinion surveys on EU citizens' attitudes towards humanitarian aid and civil protection showed an overwhelming and even increasing support of Europeans for EU actions to help those most in need.

Economic Partnership Agreement finally implemented

On Monday, 14 May 2012, the interim Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and four countries of the Eastern and Southern Africa region (ESA), namely Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Zimbabwe, will start to be implemented. This Agreement, signed in Mauritius in 2009, is the first Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) to be implemented in Africa which is a major achievement in relations between this continent and the EU. It establishes a stable and predictable trade partnership for the development of the countries of the region.

Mauritius, 15 March 2012 - On 14 and 15 March 2012 representatives from the European Union, authorities and the private sector from Mauritius, Madagascar, Seychelles and Zimbabwe met at the InterContinental Hotel (Balaclava, Mauritius) to discuss the opportunities offered by the EU-Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) interim Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). The interim EPA was signed by four ESA members in 2009 and is now entering the implementation phase. It grants full access to EU markets and is accompanied by aid to boost trade capacity. This is the first EPA to enter into the implementation stage in Africa, the only other ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) cases being the Caribbean (CARIFORUM) and Pacific (Papua New Guinea).

Today, the European Union, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the representatives of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) marked the signature of a grant agreement of EUR 6 million. This is to prepare an Action Plan for the management and development of the fishery sector, and to strengthen fish and fish products contribution to food and nutrition security in the region of the Eastern and Southern Africa-Indian Ocean (ESA-IO). The Fishery sector, including aquaculture, constitutes a key economic sector and contributes significantly to economies of the ESA-IO countries. The region's potential in this development area is much higher than currently achieved.
