Political Relations
The role of the Delegation includes that of reflecting political events, developments and trends within Russia which may have a bearing on the strategic partnership between the EU and the Russian Federation; while at the same time advising on how best to support that partnership at political level.
The Delegation thus monitors political life throughout Russia; the practice of democracy and human rights in this country; Russian policies and their implementation in the area of justice, liberty and security; as well as the range of Russian foreign (and defence) policy.
The EU itself is changing in ways that may lead the Russia Federation to adjust its own vision of the European continent: the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty and the building up of EU defence and security capacities in particular.
The Delegation no longer represents only the European Commission, but the European Union, and as such plays a key role in fostering and furthering the EU-Russia strategic partnership at political level.
