EU Chargé d'Affaires speaks to civil society (29/07/2011)

On 29 July 2011, Amadou Traoré, the EU Chargé d'Affaires to Swaziland, addressed members of civil society meeting to advance issues of democracy in Swaziland. The meeting of non-state actors such as trade unions, political parties and the church took place at Ezulwini, outside Mbabane, the capital city. It sought to begin a process of political dialogue with the government of Swaziland leading to political transformation.

Mr Traoré said his presence at this important gathering was normal and expected as it was in line with the Cotonou Agreement signed and ratified by Swaziland and the EU. He said the Cotonou Agreement was the legal basis for the vibrant cooperation between the EU and Swaziland and has a political dimension which seeks to promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

In that regard, Mr Traoré said the EU fully supports the peaceful and all-inclusive process that led to the meeting and hoped it would lead to political consensus for the good of Swaziland.
