EU does not recognize elections in Abkhazia (29/08/2011)

The European Union said it would not recognize presidential elections in Abkhazia.

Spokesperson of the EU High Representative Catherine Ashton published a special statement, recalling that the European Union “does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework within which these elections have taken place”.

“The European Union reiterates its support to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as recognised by international law. The European Union would in this context like to emphasize the importance of the Geneva International Discussions in ensuring the security and stability in the region”, the statement adds.

Presidential elections in the breakaway region of Abkhazia in Georgia were held on August 26th. According to preliminary results of the poll, Alexander Ankvab has been elected as new president of the region.
