29/01/13 - HCOC Commemorative Event
A commemorative event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hague Code of Conduct against Ballistic Missile Proliferation (HCoC) was held in Vienna, at the Diplomatic Academy, on 14-15 January 2013. The event was sponsored by the European Union, through the Council Decision in support of ballistic missile non-proliferation in the framework of the implementation of the EU Strategy against the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (2012/423/CFSP).

14/01/13 - Award of Nobel Peace Prize to the EU and recognition of EU - CTBTO cooperation
On the occasion of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union, and to commemorate Human Rights Day, a reception took place on Monday, 10 December 2012, at the House of the European Union in Vienna.

EU - IAEA Senior Officials Meeting in Brussels - 25 January 2013
On 25 January 2013 officials of the EU and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) met in Brussels for a first ever Senior Level meeting bringing together officials from the European External Action Service and various EU Commission Services with Senior officials from the IAEA to discuss enhanced cooperation between the institutions.

Retreat of the UN EU Heads of Mission on 8 February 2013 at IIASA, Laxenburg
EU Heads of Mission (HoMs) and Ambassador Mara Marinaki, Managing Director, Global and Multilateral Issues Department, European External Action Service, participated in a retreat at the premises of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) on 8 February 2013, to discuss European and international policies and to learn about IIASA’s policy-relevant research in climate, energy, food, water, and the environment.

56th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) - Vienna 11-15 March 2013
The 56th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) took place in Vienna from 11 to 15 March 2013. The CND adopted 15 resolutions and 1 decision and the EU tabled 5 of the resolutions adopted. During the CND, the EU organised two side events on The EU Drugs Strategy 2013-2020, and on The EU Illicit Drug Market Study.

Meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors 4 – 6 March 2013
The meeting of the 35-nation IAEA Board of Governors (BoG) took place from 4 – 6 March. The Board agreed to the re-election of Director General, Yukiya Amano, for a second four-year term of office by acclamation. The Board discussed a number of matters, including the implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, the Nuclear Technology Review and nuclear verification with regard to the DPRK, Iran and Syria. Eight EU statements were delivered.

22nd Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) - Vienna 22-26 April 2013
The 22nd Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) took place in Vienna from 22 to 26 April 2013. The CCPCJ adopted 19 resolutions and 1 decision. The EU co-sponsored 5 resolutions.

EU Heads of Missions Visit to the Seibersdorf Laboratories – 14 May 2013
On 14 May, Ambassador Györgyi Martin Zanathy, Head of the EU Delegation in Vienna, together with the EU Heads of Missions, Deputy Director General of EURATOM, Peter Farros, and senior officials from the Joint Research Center, convened at the IAEA Laboratories in Seibersdorf for a one day visit, to receive in-depth briefings on the science conducted there and on the IAEA's plans for modernisation of the laboratories.

29/11/12 - Meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors 29 – 30 November 2012
The 35-nation IAEA Board of Governors (BoG) concluded its final meeting of the year on 30 November 2012. The body discussed a number of matters including: the report of the Technical Assistance and Cooperation Committee, which concluded its deliberations earlier this week; the implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety; application of safeguards in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea; implementation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty's (NPT) safeguards agreement and relevant provisions of United Nations Security Council resolutions in the Islamic Republic of Iran; and implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic. Six EU statements were delivered.

26/11/12 - Meeting of IAEA Technical Assistance and Cooperation Committee (TACC) 26 – 27 November 2012
The Technical Assistance and Cooperation Committee (TACC) of the Board of Governors held its annual session from 26 to 27 November and discussed the Technical Cooperation budget for next year. The Committee has recommended that the €67.4 million budget for 2013 be approved by the IAEA Board of Governors. Two EU statements were delivered: on the TC Programme for 2012 and on the Evaluation of TC activities in 2012.

20/11/12 - UNIDO - Meeting of the Industrial Development Board, 20-26 November 2012
The 40th session of the Industrial Development Board (IDB) of UNIDO took place in Vienna on 20 - 22 November 2012. The IDB Plenary discussed: the Annual Report of the Director General for 2011; the External Auditor’s Report; the Report of the Program and Budget Committee; activities of the Evaluation Group; activities of the Joint Inspection Unit; UNIDO's activities in environment and energy; the Informal Working Group on the future of UNIDO; personnel matters; and industrial innovation and production capacity. Six EU statements were delivered.

15/10/12 - UNODC - Sixth session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC), 15 - 19 October 2012
The 6th session of the Conference of Parties (CoP) to the UN Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC), took place in Vienna on 15-19 October 2012. The Conference made progress on a number of issues, including on the illicit manufacturing and trafficking in firearms, the smuggling of migrants over land, sea and air, and the provision of technical assistance under UNTOC. The EU delivered an opening statement.

05/11/12 - CTBTO – 39th Session of the Preparatory Commission
The 39th Session of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission (PrepCom) took place in Vienna on 22-23 October 2012. The main issue at the 39th Session was to take a decision on the appointment of the next Executive Secretary to replace Ambassador Tibor Tóth, who will leave his position on 31 July 2013. Five candidates ran for this position, coming from Burkina Faso, Chile, Mongolia, the Netherlands and the Philippines. Following the election procedures, the Commission endorsed Dr. Lassina Zerbo (Burkina Faso), currently Director of the International Data Centre, (see his photo above) as the next Executive Secretary of the CTBTO PrepCom as from August 2013.

05/11/12 - EU-UNODC Annual Senior Officials Meeting, 24 October 2012, Vienna
On 24 October 2012, the EU and UNODC held their 8th Senior Officials Meeting in Vienna. The EU Delegation was lead by Ms. Mara Marinaki, Managing Director for Global and Multilateral Issues of the European External Action Service. The UNODC Delegation was lead by Mr. Sandeep Chawla, Deputy Executive Director of UNODC.

30/10/12 - 56th Annual Session of IAEA General Conference
The 56th annual session of the IAEA General Conference took place from 17 – 22 September 2012. Mr. Carlos Barros Oreiro of Uruguay was elected as President of the GC. During the general debate the EU statement was delivered by the Cypriot Minister of Labour and Social Insurance and the EURATOM statement was delivered by Deputy Director General of the Directorate General for Energy, Peter Faross.

30/10/12 - IAEA Board of Governors: 10 – 14 September 2012
The IAEA Board of Governors met from 10 – 14 September 2012 under the chairmanship of the Italian Permanent Representative, H.E. Mr. Filippo Formica. During its session, the Board adopted a resolution: 'urging Iran to comply fully and without delay with all its obligations under the relevant Resolutions of the UNSC, and to meet the requirements of the Board of Governors, including the application of the modified Code 3.1 and the implementation and prompt entry into force of the Additional Protocol.' During this Board of Governors meeting, seven EU statements were delivered.

30/10/12 - UNCITRAL
The fifty-seventh session of the Working Group II of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) dedicated to "Arbitration and Conciliation" took place in Vienna from 1 to 5 October, 2012. UNCITRAL is the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law.

27/09/12 - 2nd CNS EXTRAORDINARY MEETING
States that are party to the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) gathered at IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, from 27-31 August 2012 to discuss long-term safety issues. From 27-31 August, Contracting Parties to the Convention of Nuclear Safety, including all the EU Member States, as well as the European Commission on behalf of the EURATOM Community, participated in the 2nd CNS Extraordinary Meeting held at the IAEA premises in Vienna

22/06/12 - 55th Session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) – 6-15 June 2012
The 55th Session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) was held from 6 to 15 June 2012. The Session was chaired by Mr. Yasushi Horikawa (Japan). Ambassador Györgyi Martin Zanathy, Head of the EU Delegation in Vienna, delivered a statement on behalf of the EU and its Member States at the opening Plenary of the Session.

05/06/12 - Multilateral Meeting on the Development of an International Code of Conduct for Outer Space Activities
Mr. Maciej Popowski, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, based in Brussels, visited Vienna on 5 June 2012 to officially open the Multilateral "kick off" Meeting on the International Code of Conduct for Outer Space Activities.

23/05/12 - Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. Fourth Review Meeting of Contracting Parties. Vienna, Austria, 14 – 23 May 2012
Euratom participated in the Fourth Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management (the “Joint Convention"), which was held at the Headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), from 14 to 23 May 2012.

08/05/12 - Measuring Corruption and Crime affecting the Population and Business in the Western Balkans (2010-2013)
The side event at the 21st Session of the CCPCJ on ‘Measuring corruption and crime affecting the population and business in the Western Balkans (2010-2013)” was organized by the Permanent Mission of Montenegro and the UNODC Policy Analysis and Research Branch, and took place on Thursday 26 April 2012.

04/05/12 - CCPCJ 21st Session
The 21st Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice took place in Vienna from 23 to 27 April 2012. During the Session, various aspects of transnational organized crime were discussed, including corruption and human trafficking, threats to the rule of law, human rights and socio-economic development. The 2012 CCPCJ session gathered around 800 people, 111 states and 38 Non Governmental Organisations.

03/05/12 - Support to prison reform in the Kyrgyz Republic, "Parallel"
H.E. Ambassador Mrs Györgyi Margit Martin Zanathy, H.E. Mrs Lydia Imanalieva, Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic to Austria, and the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Mr Yuri Fedotov opened the photo exhibition "Parallel'. It was organized in the framework of the project "Support to Prison Reform in the Kyrgyz Republic", funded by the EU and implemented by UNODC.

30/03/12 - CND 55th Session
The 55th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs took place in Vienna from 12 to 16 March 2012. During the Session, various aspects of the world drug problem were discussed, including the prevention of illicit drug use through national, regional and international measures. The 2012 CND session gathered 1,200 participants from 120 countries as well as observers, international organizations and NGOs.
The EU delivered four statements, tabled four resolutions and co-sponsored the twelve resolutions that were adopted at the end of the Plenary Session.

28/03/12 - IAEA Board of Governors
The IAEA Board of Governors concluded its spring session on 9 March 2012. During this session, various issues were discussed, including the implementation of the NPT safeguards agreements in Iran and in Syria as well as the progress report of the implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, which was developed following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. In total five EU statements have been delivered.
