The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini visited Kyiv on 16 and 17 December to hold meetings with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk and Ministers from his government, as well as the representatives of the opposition and civil society.
In Kyiv, Mogherini stated: "The EU stays firmly and strongly at the side of Ukrainian People (…) to support the process initiated in Minsk to implement all the points that are in the Minsk agreement." She also stressed the importance of EU-Ukraine cooperation on the reform agenda for Ukraine. "It is now time for the EU and Ukraine to move to a different stage of their relationship, a stage that can bring reforms … that could change the everyday life of Ukrainian citizens," she said at a press conference. During her visit to Ukraine Mogherini took time to meet representatives of civil society and thanked them for their crucial role in promoting change in the country.
Mogherini's visit comes just after the first EU-Ukraine Association Council in Brussels and indicates the EU's s firm commitment to the relationship with Ukraine. While in Kyiv, the HRVP stressed the unity of all EU Member States in their strong support for Ukraine and its reform agenda, as demonstrated most recently in the meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels on 15 December. Ukraine will also feature on the agenda of the meeting of EU heads of state and government in Brussels on 18 and 19 December.
