The EU is seeking to broaden and diversify the agenda of its relationship with Vietnam, beyond development co-operation and trade, to increase political co-operation on issues of global concern.
On 27 June 2012, Vietnam and the European Union signed a new Partnership and Co-operation Agreement (PCA), which will provide a comprehensive and ambitious framework to take forward bilateral ties. On 26 June 2012, Vietnam and the EU also launched the negotiation of a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Vietnam is a key partner country within ASEAN. It will notably act until 2015 as ASEAN coordinator for relations with the EU.
