H.E. Ambassador Birgitte Markussen, Head of the European Union Delegation to the African Union.
Message from the Ambassador
Welcome to the website of the Delegation of the European Union to the African Union.
Welcome to the website of the Delegation of the European Union to the African Union!
I am honoured to be the fourth Ambassador of the European Union posted to the African Union. The EU opened its Delegation to the AU in 2008, the first to do so among other partners, and this is one of the many signs of our strong and growing partnership with Africa and the African Union . A first Summit brought our respective leaders together in Lisbon in 2007 and we have concluded the sixth European Union - African Union summit that took place in Brussels in February 2022. I invite you to read Towards a comprehensive Strategy with Africa and the latest summit outcomes highlighting the diversity and intensity of the EU-Africa partnership.
Together with our African counterparts in the AU Commission and among AU Member States, the EU has identified key areas of political engagement and of concrete work, building on a number of flagship programmes. As you will read on the website, our cooperation covers a broad areas of activities, ranging from support to trade and economic integration (AfCFTA), to peace and stability on the continent, democratic governance, migration and mobility, green and digital transformation. As a development and political partner, both through actions on the short and the long term, the EU supports the AU and African partners in their efforts to recover from the covid pandemic. As #TeamEurope, we have been on the forefront with vaccine delivery but also by providing structural support to health systems including vaccine manufacturing.
Indeed , EU-Africa cooperation is not only about ministerial summits or declarations. Africa being Europe’s closest neighbour the European Union is committed to partner with the AU and African countries to help achieve common objectives related to sustainable development and peace, transforming into reality a number of key engagements including on climate change (Paris declaration) and development (Agendas 2030 and 2063). We very much have in mind the aspirations of young people when working together as they represent the majority of Africa’s population. Only by bringing people together, ideally physically if not virtually, we will be able to come to genuine understanding. Two continents, One beat.
