About the Ambassador

Ambassador H.E. Lawrence Meredith studied at Oxford University and holds a First Class Honours B.A. in Russian and French from The Queen's College. He speaks English, French, Russian, Spanish, German and Italian. He is a keen birdwatcher, enjoys biking, and supports Bradford City.

Mr Meredith was the EU Ambassador to New Zealand from 2023 - 2026. Before that, he was the Director for Neighbourhood East and Institution Building within the European Commission, managing relations and cooperation with the EU’s Eastern Partnership countries.

My name is Lawrence Meredith, and it is my honour to serve as the next European Union Ambassador to Australia.

I am deeply privileged to take on this role alongside my colleagues in Team Europe at such a pivotal moment in our shared history. 

The European Union and Australia have been mates – true partners – for the past 60 years. We share a belief in democracy, the rule of law, human rights and the rules-based international order. 

The visit of President von der Leyen to Australia has transformed Australia's relationship with the European Union. Our new Security and Defence Partnership, the Free Trade Agreement and Australia's upcoming association to Horizon Europe will bring us closer than ever before.

Australia is a vibrant, innovative and resilient country and a natural partner for the EU. We both understand that when we work together, we are stronger.
