AU-EU Expert Seminar on Transitional Justice: Theme: Reparations and Transitional Justice-Perspectives and Approaches from Africa and Europe, Abuja, Nigeria

Abuja, June 19, 2025 - The African Union (AU) and the European Union, in collaboration with the Consortium implementing the Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa (ITJA), will host the 5th Edition of the EU-AU Experts’ Seminar on Transitional Justice (TJ) from June 19 to June 20, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria.

This two-day event will bring together up to 50 transitional justice experts from Africa and Europe to explore the critical theme of “Reparations and Transitional Justice: Perspectives and Approaches from Africa and Europe.” The seminar is convened as part of the AU and EU collaboration to advance transitional justice.

Building on the outcome of the 2024 seminar in Brussels, this year’s event will focus on reparations as a cornerstone of transitional justice, addressing the legacies of human rights violations, historical injustices, and contemporary conflicts. The seminar aims to enhance cross-continental collaboration among policymakers, practitioners, and civil society to foster joint initiatives for designing and implementing victim-centered reparation programs. It will explore innovative and sustainable funding models for financing reparations. The seminar will further discuss strategies for gender-responsive reparations, environmental justice, and integrating rehabilitation into reparations programs.

The seminar will be attended by policymakers, representatives from multilateral agencies, transitional justice practitioners, civil society representatives, academia, and stakeholders from both regions.
