EU and AU joint action towards an effective cease-fire in eastern DRC and stability and peace in the Great Lakes region

The EU Special Representative for the Great Lakes region, Johan Borgstam, visited Addis Ababa (23–24 March 2026) for high-level talks with the African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN) on the conflict in eastern DRC, regional dynamics in the Great Lakes region and African-led peace mediation efforts. Against the background of continued deterioration of the security and humanitarian crises in eastern DRC, discussions with interlocutors such as AUC Chairperson´s Chief of Staff Mohamed El-Amine Souef, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Bankole Adeoye, H.E. former President of Ethiopia Saleh-Work Zewde, Facilitator on humanitarian issues and UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union Parfait Onanga-Anyanga focussed on the urgent need for an effective cease-fire in eastern DRC and the importance of a political solution to the conflict to advance towards stability and peace in the Great Lakes region.

The EU and AU, as key partners on peace and security, explored concrete ways to further strengthen  African-led peace mediation in the Great Lakes region and discussed potential EU support to the AU-led mediation architecture.

Discussions reaffirmed the partners´ joint commitment to African-led and African-owned solutions aligning with the AU’s Agenda 2063 and the Joint declaration of 7th EU-AU summit in Luanda. Inclusive African peace efforts are key to a lasting political solution.

Both partners agreed on the urgency of an effective ceasefire, the need for unimpeded humanitarian access and the importance of strengthening peace mediation, working towards a political solution to the conflict." The Great Lakes region needs an immediate stop of hostilities and an effective ceasefire in eastern DRC as a first step towards stability and lasting peace. Effective mediation and sincere re-engagement of all parties for a political solution to the conflict are key. Peace is possible—when there is a will and when we work together”, reaffirmed the EU Special Representative Johan Borgstam
