EU and AU strengthen cooperation on infrastructure, energy and connectivity

On October 01, 2026, EU Ambassador to the African Union H.E. Javier Niño Pérez met with H.E. Lerato D. Mataboge, AU Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, to discuss the longstanding and strategic EU-AU partnership in infrastructure. The meeting provided an opportunity to review ongoing cooperation across energy, digitalisation and transport, as well as opportunities to further support regional infrastructure investments.

The discussion covered key areas of cooperation, including the African Single Electricity Market, the Continental Power Systems Masterplan, the African Energy Efficiency Strategy, digital regulation and cybersecurity, the Single African Air Transport Market and road safety. Both sides also explored opportunities to strengthen regional investment pipelines, including in the context of the forthcoming third iteration of the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa Priority Action Plan (PIDA PAP).

Ambassador Javier Niño Pérez and Commissioner Lerato D. Mataboge also exchanged views on digital regulation and transport connectivity, with both sides recognising the importance of responsible digital development and effective regulatory frameworks. EU and AU will continue to work together to advance regional connectivity, mobilise investment and support sustainable infrastructure development across Africa.
