Can you feel the rhythm?
Just like music combines instruments to create harmony, Europe and Africa are joining forces to champion a green future that creates jobs, empowers communities, and nurtures the environment. And the new generation is leading this change.
Through the Global Gateway and the international pledging campaign Scaling up Renewables in Africa, the European Union is leading efforts to rapidly expand clean energy, aiming to triple renewable capacity by 2030.
Together, let's power Africa's green transition.
Meet the voices that are shaping Africa’s greener future.
Across Africa, a generation of heroes is turning challenges into opportunities. Watch (and read) their stories.
Tune in with Rova
Hi, I’m Rova, 29 years old, and I’m a researcher.
I’m an environmentalist, and nature is very close to my heart.
Most Madagascan households use firewood and charcoal as a source of energy and for cooking, and this causes massive deforestation, air pollution, and various diseases.
That is why I chose my project “The Energy Transition through the use of biogas”.
I believe biogas is part of a real shift happening right now in Madagascar. It opens up new opportunities for young researchers, creates economic value, and shows that protecting the environment can benefit everyone.
Together, we can change things.
Tune in with Buzayehu
Hello, I’m Buzayehu.
I live in Bukusabi Kebele, Geba Robi, and I’m a farmer.
The land in this area was degraded, and we did not even understand the problem. Sometimes we would plant, and the next year we would let the land rest. But even so, we suffered year after year.
Then I was selected for the Soil Matters programme, probably because I was a good farmer. Through the training, we learned about compost and vermicompost, how to rehabilitate damaged soil, and finally, about biogas.
Sharing my knowledge and experience helps me grow and learn from others. By discussing things together, we try to find solutions, because
you cannot succeed by running alone.
If young farmers take it seriously, form a group and work together, they will succeed and benefit a lot.
Tune in with Kwame
I’m Kwame Adu Agyekum, a marine scientist based at the University of Ghana, and I coordinate the GMES in Africa project.
Growing up, I’ve always loved the ocean.
Fishermen at sea are constantly exposed to risk. Before this initiative, they relied mainly on traditional knowledge, observation and experience.
Through the GMES in Africa initiative, we can provide safety-at-sea alerts to fishermen. The programme has given us access to data, enabling us to build skills in remote sensing, GIS, data visualisation and data interpretation.
It has also helped younger people become more confident, giving them the tools to use satellite data for better resource management.
If we want to protect the resources we have today, we need to understand how we impact them — and satellite data helps us do that.
Projects
The green transition for the use of domestic biogas
The Green Transition for the Use of Domestic Biogas is a Global Gateway initiative that promotes clean, affordable energy solutions for households. By supporting the adoption of biogas, it helps reduce deforestation and pollution, improve health conditions and create sustainable opportunities for local communities.
Soil Matters
Soil Matters is a Global Gateway initiative focused on improving soil health and promoting agroecology across Africa. By supporting innovation, research and sustainable farming practices, the project helps farmers increase productivity while protecting natural resources. It also creates new opportunities for young people, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable agricultural future.
GMES & Africa Project
GMES & Africa is a Global Gateway initiative that uses Earth observation data to support sustainable development across the continent. By providing reliable environmental and climate information, the project helps governments, institutions and communities make informed decisions in areas such as agriculture, water management and disaster risk reduction.
Oyo Centre of Excellence – supported by EU under CEREEAC–CEO
The Oyo Centre of Excellence, supported by the EU under the CEREEAC–CEO programme, promotes sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in Central Africa. By strengthening skills, research and regional cooperation, it supports the protection of ecosystems while creating opportunities for local communities.
ATD Solar
ATD Solar is a Global Gateway initiative that expands access to clean and reliable solar energy. By supporting sustainable energy solutions and local capacity building, it helps communities reduce energy costs, strengthen resilience and accelerate the green transition.
