2025 EU and Qantas Journalist Award: Applications Open

The EU and Qantas Journalist Award, in partnership with the National Press Club, has recognized excellence in Australian journalism since 1992. This prestigious award offers winners the opportunity to travel to Europe and uncover stories relevant to Australia. Thanks to Qantas, the winner will fly Business Class to Europe to research and report on their chosen topic related to the European Union.

About the EU and Qantas Journalist Award

The award comes at a critical time in global geopolitics, when the bilateral relations between the EU and Australia are growing extensively. Australia has made a significant contribution to support Ukraine, and by extension, Europe, democracy and the rules based order globally.

The award is open to all Australian journalists who have 3 or more years of experience in the Australian media and can prove that they would benefit from a working visit to the European Union (Brussels and up to 3 European Union Member States).

We invite journalists to send in a proposal, supported by their editors, that pitches several reporting pieces focused on European themes of interest to Australian audiences. The pieces must be published following their return from the ten-day working visit to Europe.

The subjects of the project proposal are open to particular interests of the journalist and the proposed program must be based on current European-Australian themes. A summary report on resultant coverage must also be provided following the visit.

How to apply?

Applicants must submit their proposal, as well as three examples of published work from the previous 12 months, and have their employer's written recommendation, and confirmation to participate in the program.

Selection is based primarily on the proposals theme and how the project explores the topic. Originality and innovation is highly valued, and multimedia packages are welcome.

Journalists should outline the media platforms they will publish/broadcast on in the proposal, including any use of social media.

Deadline for applications: COB, Wednesday, 9 April 2025

Please submit your application through the National Press Club of Australia website.
