The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organizations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.
The EU Delegation to the Australia in Canberra works in close coordination with the Embassies and Consulates of the 27 EU Member States. We are a fully-fledged diplomatic mission and represent the European Union in dealings with the Australian government in areas that are part of the EU’s remit.
We offer
The post of Communication and Media Assistant (Local Agent Group 2) in the Political, Press and Information Section. The team consists of 8 people and there are occasional atypical working hours.
Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation, and on the changes of these needs. The successful candidate will report to the Head of the Political, Press and Information Section, providing support, expertise and assistance in the relevant fields. It is a full-time position, 37.5 hrs a week.
Following main tasks and duties are currently required:
- Manage the Delegation's social media and internet profile to ensure that it is informative, accurate and up-to-date.
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of the Delegation's Communications and media strategy.
- Draft and edit the Delegation Newsletter and the EU Passport and contribute to other publications as appropriate.
- Organise and implement public diplomacy activities, incl. follow-up.
- Contribute to meetings of the media and public diplomacy EU Missions’ group, and ensure follow-up.
- Contribute to monitoring and follow-up of Australian media.
- Manage media-related contact lists of the Delegation.
- Select and streamline audio-visual material.
- Contribute to speeches, briefings as relevant.
The salary starting from 6 540/month before tax will depend on relevant and verified qualification and employment experience (salary cannot be negotiated). The post is already vacant.
Eligibility criteria necessary for the application to be considered:
- 3 years undergraduate qualification in the relevant sector (journalism, media, Public Relations, political science, or related field).
- 2 years’ work experience of in the relevant fields - media, online publishing, Public Relations, international affairs, content creation, etc.
- Excellent command of English (oral and written).
- Microsoft Office.
- Excellent knowledge of digital media.
- Excellent social media skills.
- Valid working permit in Australia.
Assets / selection criteria (basis for awarding points to select the best applicant)
- Previous experience linked to the EU / European affairs.
- Proficiency in other EU languages.
- Knowhow / Experience in producing audio-visual material.
- Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
- Ability to focus on priorities as set by the Head of PPI Section and to deliver according to the set priorities in due time and at the highest level of accuracy.
- Ability to maintain good professional relationship with all relevant interlocutors in an international and multicultural environment.
- Ability to understand new subjects quickly.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ability to be service-oriented, flexible and to deal with stress situations.

The process
After the deadline for applications, the eligible applications will be admitted to the Selection by the Committee set up for this purpose.
Depending on the number of applications received, successive phases of Selection may include shortlisting of candidates based assessment of the information provided in the cover letter, CV, and a writing example. At least 3 best candidates will be invited to the interview.
Only candidates admitted to each successive selection phase will be contacted individually. The Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this job advertisement to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.
