Europe Day 2026
The EU Delegation to Australia welcomed EU Member States and more than 350 distinguished guests to Parliament House to mark the 76th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, which laid the foundations of what is now the EU. The event brought together Australian and European parliamentarians, diplomats, foreign dignitaries, and business partners to celebrate the values of democracy, freedom, and equality.
This year’s Europe Day reception was particularly significant following the historic visit to Australia by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the conclusion of Free Trade Agreement negotiations, signing of the Security and Defence Partnership, and Australia’s commitment to associate to Horizon Europe from 2027. Together, these initiatives reflect a relationship between the EU and Australia that is broader, more strategic, and more ambitious than ever before.
Thank you to Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator the Hon Don Farrell, and Minister for Industry and Innovation, Senator the Hon Tim Ayres, for their remarks. We also extend our thanks to Chief of Protocol Jonathan Muir and Ngunnawal Elder Serena Williams for the official Welcome to Country and toasts.
The Canberra Symphony Orchestra made the event especially memorable with performances of the EU anthem, Ode to Joy, and the Australian national anthem.
We extend our sincere thanks to all guests who joined us to celebrate Europe Day.
