MEDUSA is a thought-provoking artwork that is sparking a conversation around environmental issues, in particular plastics and single-use plastics.

Made of recyclable plastic, MEDUSA will be upcycled into reusable rain jackets at the end of its installation life. The installation deflates to a 50kg package, meaning its travel emissions are relatively low. In this regard, MEDUSA embodies the notion of appropriate and respectful use of material.

Is Plastic Fantastic?

That was the question addressed by panellists, including EU Ambassador Michael Pulch, during the DESIGN Canberra dialogue in front of MEDUSA on 16 November.

"In Europe we are moving to a new circular plastic economy where plastic materials are kept in the loop as long as possible. This means promoting re-use and repair, recycling and the prevention of plastic waste.The comprehensive EU Plastics Strategy will ensure all plastic packaging placed on the European market is either reusable or recyclable by 2030."

 

The Ambassador joined MEDUSA designer Yena Young (Plastique Fantastique), Kate Ringvall, IKEA Australia and Geoff Isaac from the University of Technology Sydney for the public conversation, hosted by fomer ABC journalist and Canberra treasure Alex Sloan.

Canberra Bubble? Thought Bubble?

European Ambassadors and High Commissioners to Australia also had an opportunity to interact with the installation ahead of it's weekend showcase in Canberra on 16-17 November.

As part of its cultural diplomacy work, the EU Delegation to Australia supports events like DESIGN Canberra, both locally and around Australia.
