The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.
The EU Delegation to Australia in Canberra was established in 1981 and is responsible for the conduct of official relations with Australia. The Delegation works closely with all the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States represented in Australia.
We offer
We offer a post of Policy Officer. Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation.
We are looking for an energetic, experienced and highly motivated Policy Officer to deal with economic and trade issues in the EU Delegation in Australia. The successful candidate will advise on economic and trade relations between the EU and Australia and will be involved in facilitating the negotiation and implementation of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) currently negotiated between the EU and Australia. The selected candidate will play a key role in drafting economic and trade reporting to headquarters in the Delegation.
Upon recruitment, the successful candidate will occupy a specific job function as Trade Affairs Officer – this job function may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Delegation. Under this job function, the successful candidate will serve as technical and support staff to the Trade and Economics Section under the supervision and responsibility of the relevant head of section. It is a full time permanent position in an office with a multicultural environment. Going on missions will be a part of the tasks.

Selection Criteria
Minimum Requirements:
- Medically fit to perform the required duties;
- Enjoys civil rights and permits for employment under local law;
- Has a satisfactory knowledge of English;
- A University degree in the relevant sector – economics, trade or trade law, political science, international relations or related fields;
- Candidates should possess at least 5 years’ experience in the field of economics and/or trade policy. Excellent knowledge of Australia’s economy and trade relations is essential;
- Microsoft Office (Advanced Excel skills, PowerPoint), and videoconferencing technologies.
The following will be considered an asset:
- In-depth knowledge of the European Union and its policies would be an asset;
- Postgraduate qualifications would be an additional asset;
- Proficiency in other European languages would be an advantage.

The procedure
After the deadline for applications, the applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee set up for this purpose. The Selection Committee will prepare a short-list of candidates who are considered to be the most suitable for the post on the basis of a preliminary assessment of the information provided in their application letter and the supporting documents. The short-listed candidates will be invited to an assessment phase which may include an interview if necessary – during this phase, the Selection Committee will assess the suitability of the candidates for the post.
The candidates who have not been short-listed will not be contacted individually; however, the Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this Vacancy Notice to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.

Job objective |

Professional experience |

Experience in a diplomatic mission will be welcome but not a prerequisite and in-depth knowledge of the EU and its policies would be an asset. |
Knowledge of languages |
Fluency in English is essential. EN – ability to understand C2, ability to read C2, ability to speak C2, ability to write C2. |
Proficiency in other European and other languages would be an advantage. |
Knowledge of IT tools |
Microsoft Office (Advanced Excel skills, PowerPoint), and videoconferencing technologies. |
Microsoft Sharepoint, Statistical software (eg, Stata, SPSS, R), Audiovisual skills (eg, basic sound and video editing). |
