Welcoming Ambassador Lawrence Meredith to Australia

Ambassador Lawrence Meredith presented his credentials to H.E. the Hon. Sam Mostyn, Governor-General.

Ambassador Lawrence Meredith has formally begun his role as the European Union Ambassador to Australia after presenting his credentials to the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC.

The presentation of credentials is an important diplomatic step, formally confirming an ambassador’s authority to represent their Head of Mission and the European Union in the host country. It marks the official commencement of the Ambassador’s duties in Australia.

As part of the occasion, Ambassador Meredith and his wife, Ms Maria Fernanda, also took part in a Smoking Ceremony.

Ambassador Meredith takes up his post at a time of strong and growing ties between the European Union and Australia. The European Union and Australia share a close partnership based on common values and a shared commitment to the rules-based international order, open trade, and effective multilateral cooperation.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to Australia in March 2026, followed by the conclusion of negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement, a Security and Defence Partnership, and Australia’s association with Horizon Europe from 2027, has created new opportunities to deepen the partnership.

The Delegation of the European Union to Australia warmly welcomes Ambassador Meredith and looks forward to his contribution to the continued growth of EU-Australia relations.
