Global Gateway

With Global Gateway the European Union (EU) aims to boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems across the world, including in the Southern Africa region and Botswana. Global Gateway is the EU’s positive offer to our partner countries in support of their strategic autonomy in priority areas of mutual interest while scaling up high-quality geostrategic investments and promoting sustainable financing.

Strategic corridors in Southern Africa.

Botswana is at the heart of two of the three Global Gateway Strategic Corridors in Southern Africa that the EU is supporting: the corridor between Maputo and Walvis Bay and the corridor between Durban and Lubumbashi. Botswana will benefit from investments in infrastructure along these corridors with the aim of supporting integrated economic development. It will also benefit from assistance to facilitate trade and transport in the region.

NaturAfrica: a Global Gateway flagship initiative in Botswana and in the SADC region.

The NaturAfrica initiative wants to tackle biodiversity loss through restoring and protecting a network of protected areas and high value ecosystems and promoting the sustainable management of surrounding landscapes whilst creating decent incomes and jobs in green sectors for local populations.

EU Delegation to Botswana and to SADC is coordinating the NaturAfrica initiative for the Southern Africa region. With a total budget of EUR 33 million, it aims at promoting conservation and development actions in the SADC Transfrontier Conservation areas (TFCAs) network. Six TFCAs were selected as priority sites in the region, including two partially located in Botswana (see map below).

Background

Global Gateway is the European strategy to boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems across the world. Through a 'Team Europe approach', Global Gateway brings together the EU, its Member States and their financial and development institutions to mobilise the private sector to leverage investments promoting sustainable growth.

Between 2021 and 2027, Team Europe is mobilising up to €300 billion of investments for sustainable, transformational and high-quality projects, taking into account the needs of partner countries and ensuring lasting benefits for local communities. This allows EU’s partners to create resilient and sustainable societies and economies, but also create opportunities for the EU Member States’ private sector to invest and remain competitive, whilst ensuring the highest environmental and labour standards, as well as sound financial management.

The first deliverable of Global Gateway is the Africa-Europe Investment Package, concentrating on sustainable investments in infrastructure (digital, energy, transport), health, education and skills, as well as climate change and environment. It aims to boost public and private investment to create sustainable growth and jobs for Africa’s growing youth population. It has the overarching objective of bolstering Africa’s socio-economic, green and digital transformation through innovative sources of funding. It pays particular attention to upholding high standards to create enabling regulatory frameworks.
