Dukingire Ibidukikije – Let’s protect the environment in Burundi

Program for the enhancement and protection of ecosystem services in the Rusizi River watershed

The Dukingire Ibidukikije program is co-funded by the European Union for an amount of 20 million euros, and by the Kingdom of Belgium with a budget envelope of 4 million euros, over the period 2023-2027.

Dukingire Ibidukikije contributes to protecting and enhancing the ecosystem services of the Rusizi River watershed and it is structured around three components:

  • Component 1 “Protected Areas”, implemented by UNDP, aims to improve governance and sustainable, inclusive and participatory management of protected areas, in particular the Kibira and Rusizi National Parks.
  • Component 2 “Restoration & protection of land and water resources”, implemented by Enabel, aims to improve practices and mechanisms for restoration and integrated management of land and water resources.
  • Component 3 “Drinking water, hygiene and sanitation”, implemented by the NGO consortium WeWorld-GVC, Village Association for Mutual Aid and Community Development (AVEDEC), Council for Education and Development (COPED) and Welthungerhilfe (WHH), aims to improve the organization, monitoring and management of the drinking water supply service in rural areas, for the benefit and through the participation of local populations, with a focus on vulnerable communities.
