Lake Tanganyika Fisheries Management (LATAFIMA)

Regional project to improve fisheries management in Lake Tanganyika

The LATAFIMA "Lake Tanganyika Fisheries Management" project is funded by the European Union with a budget envelope of 2 million euros, and it is implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, and the Lake Tanganyika Authority.

The project aims to contribute to equitable economic growth through the promotion of sustainable fisheries on Lake Tanganyika and its four riparian countries: Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The project strengthens national and regional policies and institutional frameworks, and develops a series of measures to reinforce the fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance system in order to achieve the reduction, or even eradication of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
