Lake Tanganyika Water Management (LATAWAMA)
The LATAWAMA “Lake Tanganyika Water Management” project is funded by the European Union for a total amount of 6.9 million euros, and it is implemented by the Belgian Development Agency, Enabel, and the Lake Tanganyika Authority.
The project aims to contribute to the management and preservation of the water quality of Lake Tanganyika throughout its watershed, which includes the following countries: Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
The project develops an environmental monitoring network for Lake Tanganyika and sets up effective systems to fight against lake waters’ pollution. Effective management of solid waste, improvement of wastewater treatment capacities and protection and conservation of watersheds in the cities of Bujumbura (Burundi), Kigoma (Tanzania), Mpulungu (Zambia), Uvira (DRC) and Rusizi (Rwanda) are the priorities retained.
Thanks to a co-funding of 0.5 million euros from the Wallonia Government, which made it possible to install photovoltaic panels, the laboratories responsible for the environmental monitoring benefit from continuous access to energy.
