Overview of the Inaugural Ireland Fellows Programme in Small Island Developing States

As part of Ireland’s Strategy for Partnership with Small Island Developing States (SIDS) launched in 2019, the Irish Government has extended the Ireland Fellows Programme to include Cabo Verde*

The programme offers selected students the opportunity to undertake a fully funded one-year master’s level programme at a higher education institution in Ireland (HEI). The award covers programme fees, flights, accommodation, and living costs.

Aimed at mid-career professionals with leadership potential, who hold a Bachelors degree/equivalent, the Programme aims to develop in-country capacity to address climate change and its associated challenges, and to build positive relationships between Ireland and SIDS.

Eligible Postgraduate Programmes in Irish HEIs will be limited to courses in the area of:

o Climate Change and Resilience, Environment, Marine, Sustainable Development

o Engineering and Sustainable Technology

Applications for the Inaugural Programme are open until 13 September 2020, for the academic year commencing late summer/early autumn 2021

The scholarship will cover one academic year, 2021-2022 (finishing dates vary; usually late summer/early autumn)

Following selection by the Irish Government in January 2021, successful candidates will then have to apply directly to the relevant HEI in spring/summer 2021 in accordance with HEI calendar. Please note that selection as a fellow does not guarantee selection and admission by the relevant HEI.

Due to the current pandemic, the selection process will be conducted remotely.

*Applicants must be:

a) A citizen of Cabo Verde who is resident in Cabo Verde, or in one of the eligible African SIDS

b) A citizen of one of the African SIDS, who is resident in Cabo Verde

Eligible African SIDS include: Cabo Verde, Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritius, Sao Tomé and Príncipe.
