The 2023 winners are:
- Violette Cantin (Montréal, Québec) for her story La sobriété énergétique lyonnaise, à l’image de celle de l’Union européenne , which paints a human portrait of the effects of the European energy-saving policy on everyday life. One can feel the shiver as she writes about people pulling on an extra layer to stay warm, and business owners turning off all lights at the close of their day. Ms. Cantin demonstrates great storytelling and reporting skills.
- Natasha Bulowski (Ottawa, Ontario) for her story Leaked letter puts focus on Canada's forestry trade priorities ahead of COP15. The piece is an example of journalistic rigor in dealing with an important subject, and tackles points of commonality and divergence as Canada and the EU prepared for the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Montreal. She shows great journalistic talent and understanding of key EU-Canada policy areas.
- Lex Harvey (Toronto, Ontario) for her story How a ‘Doomsday vault’ stows the seeds of our future against disaster, which explains the cooperation between Canada and the EU in establishing the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, and its link to the challenges of climate change and biodiversity protection. Ms. Harvey demonstrates great research abilities and journalistic drive in finding relevant EU-Canada connections for readers.

The three laureates will participate in a week-long study tour of European Union institutions in Brussels in October 2023.
The Delegation of the European Union is delighted to partner with the CAJ on this initiative aimed at giving young Canadian journalists and writers an opportunity to advance their career goals and form life-long friendships with Europeans. All study tour expenses are paid for by the Delegation of the European Union to Canada. Winners also benefit from a one-year CAJ membership or one-year membership renewal.
We would like to thank all those who expressed an interest and entered the contest. We are looking forward to the next edition of the EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship in March 2024.
