Dr. Burgsmüller is a career EU diplomat with the European External Action Service (EEAS), and has held posts both in Brussels and at EU Delegations in Washington D.C. and Brasilia. Dr. Burgsmüller served in the Cabinet of Cecilia Malmström, former EU Trade Commissioner, and was part of trade negotiations with Canada, U.S., Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

“It is a great pleasure to be back in Canada, this time in my new position as Deputy Head of Mission. My family and I are thankful for the warm welcome we received on our arrival and we look forward to our next four years in this beautiful country,” said Dr. Burgsmüller.

Our political and economic partnership is strong, and will be key as we rebuild our economies and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. We will continue to build momentum in our bilateral relations in all areas of activity, including ensuring the full and effective implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).”

Dr. Burgsmüller is a lawyer by profession and is fluent in German, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. He holds a PhD in constitutional law from the University of Cologne. He joined the European Commission in 2000. His previous diplomatic postings include assignments as Head of Global Issues and Innovation Section at the EU Delegation to the U.S. between 2010 and 2014, and Head of Political and Public Affairs Section at the EU Delegation to Brazil between 2006 and 2010.
