EU Delegation in Ottawa celebrates Pride Season across Canada

This summer, the EU Delegation to Canada stood as a Human Rights Partner of three major Pride celebrations in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. We reaffirmed a clear EU support for advancing and defending LGBTQI+ rights, fostering inclusive dialogue, and building stronger partnerships with Canadian and international communities.

The EU Delegation’s Pride engagements began in Toronto with the International Human Rights Roundtable on 26 June, hosted as part of Toronto Pride. The discussion gathered activists, policymakers, and community leaders to highlight ongoing 2SLGBTQI+ struggles worldwide and explore inclusive policy solutions. On 30 July, in Montreal, the EU Delegation partnered with “Fierté Montréal” to host a screening of the award-winning film La Pampa, with the main actor present for a post-screening discussion on the challenges of coming out in rural communities. On 31 July and 1 August, we also contributed to the Égides International 2SLGBTQI+ Francophone Conference, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to global cooperation on LGBTQI+ rights. On 18 July, in Ottawa, the Delegation convened a roundtable at the Pan-Canadian 2SLGBTQI+ Legal Conference (Prisme Conference), focusing on diversity, inclusion, and legal protections, provided a unique opportunity to exchange experiences and best practices with Canadian legal professionals and advocates. Closing the summer on 20 August, we joined Ottawa Capital Pride through the “we are the village” roundtable, focused on safe spaces and human rights. On 24 August, staff of the EU Delegation was present at the Parade together with the Diplomats for Equality Group.

The EU Delegation also joined the Diplomats for Equality Joint Statement.

All these activities were funded by EU Policy and Outreach Partnership Canada (EU POP III), a project managed by the European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI).
