Europe Day reception Ottawa 2022
The programme also featured musical performances by the Ottawa Children’s Choir and the Vatra Quartet, and a special musical tribute to Ukraine. Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, Parliamentary Secretaries, Members of Parliament, Canadian Armed Forces, including Chief of Defence Staff General Wayne Eyre, and members of the diplomatic community also joined the event.
In her speech, Ambassador Gabrič expressed EU’s solidarity with Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s aggression, and highlighted EU and Canada’s shared commitment to standing up for human rights, freedom and liberal values in Europe and around the world.
This was also an occasion to celebrate the EU-Canada friendship. This year, EU and Canada mark the fifth anniversary of the Strategic Partnership Agreement and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), the bedrock of our bilateral bond. These agreements serve as a point of reference in pursuit of closer cooperation in such strategic areas as energy, raw materials, research and innovation, climate action and the digital transformation. The Joint Ministerial Committee set for 16 May in Brussels will be an occasion to step up initiatives in some of these areas.
