European Union Ambassador on official visit to Manitoba

OTTAWA - Dr. Melita Gabrič, Ambassador of the European Union to Canada, begins a three-day official visit to Manitoba today, as part of a series of outreach visits aimed at highlighting the importance of Canadian provinces and territories in EU-Canada relations.

During her visit, Ambassador Gabrič will sit down with Manitoba Premier, the Hon. Heather Stefanson, and will meet several provincial cabinet ministers.

“The EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) provides great opportunities for enhanced trade and investments between the European Union and Canadian provinces and territories. We want to continue to build on this relationship to further develop our cooperation in such strategic areas as raw minerals and ensure reliable supply chains,” said Ambassador Gabrič.

“Our economies depend on international trade with trusted partners to be able to deal with the current geopolitical tensions, the global energy crisis and the supply chain disruptions. That’s why we need to make the most of CETA.”

The visit also features meetings with business leaders and the EU consular community, and a visit to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg.

Ambassador Gabrič will also take the occasion of her visit to Manitoba, home to one of Canada’s largest Ukrainian communities, to visit Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre and meet Ukrainian newcomers and representatives from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in Winnipeg, in hopes of underlining the EU and Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine.

This is Ambassador Gabrič’s first official visit to Manitoba since she started her mandate as Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Canada in February 2021.
