Bernadette Jordan, and the Portuguese Minister of Maritime Affairs, Ricardo Serrão Santos, moderated by Vasco Becker-Weinberg, Professor at Nova University - Lisbon on the law of the sea and ocean governance.

The development of the blue economy, the preservation and sustainability of the oceans and marine resources as well as the ocean-climate nexus will be discussed, from Portugal, Canada and the EU's perspectives.
Aspects to be addresed during the webinar:
- In 2022, Portugal will be chairing, together with Kenya, the second United Nations Ocean Conference. This conference comes at a critical time as the world is strengthening its efforts to mobilize, create and drive solutions to realize the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
- Portugal and Canada are active members of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel). This Panel constitutes a unique initiative in building momentum for a sustainable ocean economy in which effective protection, sustainable production and equitable prosperity go hand-in-hand.
- Canada is also developing a comprehensive Blue Economy Strategy. With the world's longest coastline and connected to three oceans, Canada is a global key-actor in promoting international efforts to foster long-term sustainability of the oceans and their resources and in advancing the oceans-climate agenda.
- In 2016, the EU set up a joint communication on international ocean governance: an agenda for the future of our oceans, specifying 50 actions for safe, secure, clean and sustainably managed oceans in Europe and around the world. The ocean partnership between the EU and Canada signed in 2019 is also an important framework to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, their resources, and ecosystems.
