Climate ambition: EU stays the course and sends a strong message ahead of COP 30 in Belém
EU Member States have agreed on a general approach for the EU’s 2040 climate target: a legally binding goal to cut net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, including an 85% domestic target and up to 5% international carbon credits.
At the same time, the EU has submitted its new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement to the UNFCCC: to reduce net emissions by 66.25–72.5% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels.
European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, said: “The EU has just adopted its NDC for 2035. 66-72% in GHG reduction by 2035 from 1990. A milestone on our path to reaching climate neutrality in Europe by 2050. And to keeping the Paris goals within reach.”
Moreover, with €31.7 billion in 2024, the EU and its Member States remain a leader in climate finance for developing countries. We have mobilised an additional €11 billion in private finance to support developing countries in combating climate change and adapting to its impacts.
Together, these milestones send a strong, united message ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil:
- Europe is staying the course on its path to climate neutrality by 2050.
- The EU remains firmly committed to achieving the Paris Agreement goals.
