On 3 March, the EU Delegation to China, with the support of the public diplomacy program EUPOP, organised an “Interpreters’ Gathering”. The event aimed to foster connections between interpretation and translation professionals frequently involved in official visits and working exchanges between the EU and China.
EU Ambassador to China Jorge Toledo set the friendly tone of this event in his opening address. He noted that interpreters’ work lies at the heart of cross-cultural communication and is invaluable to EU-China relations. As we mark the 50th anniversary of EU-China diplomatic relations, Ambassador Toledo reminded a successful case of EU-China cooperation: the EU-China Interpreter Training Project (EUCITP), one of the longest-standing cooperation ventures between the EU and China. For over 30 years, this project provided in-house training to young Chinese officials, offered pedagogical assistance to universities, and nurtured a strong people-to-people component. It promoted multilingualism and contributed to a deeper understanding of the European Union in China.
