EU and IOM host training on identification of victims of trafficking

On 14 and 15 May 2024, the EU Delegation to China and the International Organisation for Migration co-hosted a training on the identification of victims of trafficking, attended by European Union Member States’ Consular and Visa Officials in Beijing. This training is part of the EU-China Dialogue on Migration and Mobility Support Project - Phase III (abbreviated as MMSP III) and aimed to enhance the participants' ability to identify and report on potential victims of trafficking.
Ms Zsuzsanna Felkai Janssen, representing the Directorate General on Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission, recalled that trafficking is the most profitable form of crime and that fight against trafficking of human being (THB) is an obligation according to Article 84 of the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union. The EU approach to THB is intersectional and while multiple vulnerabilities may lead to a higher risk, children from high educational backgrounds can also be victims of trafficking. The new 2011/36/EU Directive will enter into force in June 2024 and will add three new types of exploitation, namely forced surrogacy, forced marriage and illegal adoption among other new measures.
The MMSP-III is funded since July 2023 by the European Union through the EU Delegation to China and implemented by the International Organisation for Migration. Cooperation between the European Union and China on matters of mutual interest and priorities regarding fighting trafficking of human being will contribute to address migration as a global challenge.
