A special screening to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
On 25 November 2025, to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Delegation of the European Union to the people’s republic of China hosted a special screening of “Confessions of a Swedish Man” at the Instituto Cervantes in Beijing, kindly supported by the Embassy of Sweden and Baturu.
The Swedish documentary, produced by Helene Granqvist and directed by Hampus Linder, offers a powerful reflection on masculinity, responsibility, and the social norms that enable gender-based violence.
After the screening, producer Helene Granqvist, and Chinese director Shen Yu joined a podium discussion on gender norms, the role of women in film, how modern, non-toxic models of masculinity can help prevent violence against women and how men can become active part of the solution.
The speakers highlighted that transforming harmful norms and promoting healthier expressions of masculinity are essential steps toward gender equality. Meaningful male engagement is crucial in building a society where women can live free from violence.
Thank you to all guests, partners, and participants for contributing to this important conversation.
Let’s keep working together for a world where every woman and girl can live in safety and dignity.
