New metaverse apps popping up, big tech investments, new industry associations, local experiments, and an increasing interest from the regulators: China’s metaverse seems to be flourishing. Yet, as the hype grows, news headlines proliferate, and investments boom, it remains difficult to understand in what ways the metaverse is reshaping and will be reshaping the Internet economy in China and globally.
