EU brings smiles to Eswatini youth with Re-Think Waste Youth Challenge awards
The competition held within the framework of the EU Green Diplomacy Weeks taking place in October and November 2025, sought to challenge the youth of Eswatini to become eco-educators by shaping how families, schools and communities think about waste consumption and circular living.
Participants were required to send entries that teach smart waste habits, simplify recycling and circular economy concepts that provoke reflection about waste and sustainability, thus finding solutions towards an environmentally friendly and climate smart Eswatini.
During the awards ceremony held today at Sibani Sami hotel at Ezulwini, winners emerged from three categories – Eco Educator Award, Creative Communicator Award and Community Impact Award.
Sibongumenzi Ntuli emerged the first prize winner of the Eco Educator category, with Setsabile Nkambule being the runner-up.
The Creative Communicator first prize went to Setsabile Nkambule, whilst Sicalo Maziya was the runner up.
The Community Impact Award went to Siyabonga Nxumalo, with Andile Khumalo receiving the runner-up prize.
The rest of the participants received certificates of participation.
Presenting the prizes, EU Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklebnurg, congratulated all participants for their creativity and innovation and hoped they will go back to their communities to implement their ideas so that the fight for environmental protection and against climate change will be easier.
EU in Eswatini
Meanwhile, on the same day, again as part of promoting the green agenda and environmental protection, Ambassador Mecklenburg planted some indigenous trees at Motshane constituency, west of Mbabane, in an event organised by Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA).
During this event, the Ambassador reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to promoting the green agenda around the world, including Eswatini, and further underscoring the achievements of international climate action.
