The EU Children Races 2025

The EU Children Races 2025, held on 11 May at the Ethiopian Sport Academy, was a resounding success, drawing the participation of over 2,600 children from across Addis Ababa and surrounding areas. The event, organized by the Great Ethiopian Run in close cooperation with the European Union Delegation to Ethiopia, celebrated youth, sportsmanship, and community spirit.
EU Ambassador to Ethiopia, H.E. Sofie From-Emmesberger, along with EU Member States’ Ambassadors cheered on the young participants. Also in attendance was two-time Olympic gold medallist and national hero, Athlete Meseret Defar, who inspired the children with her presence and awarded prizes to the winners.
The event served not only as a celebration of athletic talent among children but also as a symbol of the strong partnership between the European Union and Ethiopia, promoting values of inclusion, health, and empowerment through sport.
The enthusiastic participation and vibrant atmosphere made the EU Children Races 2025 a memorable occasion for all involved, reinforcing the importance of youth engagement in sports and community development.
EU Ambassador to Ethiopia, Sofie From-Emmesberger said “We are proud to partner with Great Ethiopian Run, schools, and communities to make this event possible. And we are especially inspired by the young athletes who remind us, year after year, of the strength and hope that lie in the next generation. As we celebrate 50 years of EU-Ethiopia relations and, indeed, friendship this year, we reaffirm our commitment to building inclusive, youth-centered futures – through sport, through culture, and through shared values.”
