As part of this year’s #GirlsTakeover, the Delegation of the European Union to Ethiopia highlights the leadership potential of young Ethiopian girls and advocates for their equal participation in decision-making arenas. The initiative forms part of the EU’s ongoing commitment under the #EUGenderActionPlan to empower girls and promote women’s leadership for a more inclusive and equitable future.
This year, Ehitemedhin Abebaw took on the role of the Ambassador for the Day, a symbolic opportunity provided through Plan International’s global #GirlsTakeover campaign. Throughout the day, she shadowed EU Ambassador H.E. Sofie From-Emmesberger, beginning with a visit to Kotebe University for the Ambassador’s public lecture under EU Comes to Your University. Ehitemedhin then met with team leaders of the Delegation, who then invited her for lunch prior to delivering an insightful presentation on child parliaments to all EU staff. The experience culminated with a dinner event at the Ambassador’s residence, marking a memorable day that reflected her confidence, curiosity, and leadership potential.
Plan International Ethiopia has long been at the forefront of empowering girls to lead, learn, and thrive. Through the #GirlsTakeover campaign, the organization amplifies girls’ voices and challenges as well as the social norms that limit their opportunities. In partnership with the EU, this initiative demonstrates that when girls are given the chance to lead, they inspire change within their communities and beyond.
The EU remains committed to supporting initiatives that advance gender equality and strengthen girls’ leadership. Together with partners like Plan International Ethiopia, we continue to work toward a future where every girl can realize her potential and shape the world around her.
