Strengthening the EHRC’s Role in Safeguarding Human Rights in the Justice System
Objectives
-
Increased rule of law, respect for human rights, and access to justice for all.
-
Increased respect for and protection of human rights in the Criminal Justice System of Ethiopia.
Project Activities
The project will strengthen the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission’s capacity to investigate and respond to human rights violations linked to the criminal justice system. It will support the Commission in conducting independent inquiries and evidence-based reporting on key justice-related issues. In parallel, a nationwide public education campaign will be launched—using diverse media channels—to increase awareness of human rights, legal protections, and the roles of the EHRC and legal aid providers. The EHRC will also be supported in its coordination with civil society organisations and legal aid clinics to expand access to justice for vulnerable groups.
Expected Results
-
Enhanced capacity to provide oversight, to provide redress for victims of human rights violations under users of the criminal justice system, and to hold justice institutions to account.
-
Increased coordination of the provision of legal aid in criminal cases by NGOs, university-based law clinics, and other legal aid service providers.
