EU Commissioner Hoekstra Outlines COP Priorities During Visit to Fiji and Tuvalu

"For the European Union, staying as close as possible to 1.5 degrees and getting back below 1.5, remains the non-negotiable goal."

This was the statement by the European Commissioner for Climate, Net-Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra during his visit to Fiji and Tuvalu for PreCOP31.

Commissioner Hoekstra brought Pacific priorities into sharp focus ahead of COP31, emphasising that limiting global warming is a matter of absolute survival. To achieve this, he outlined four key priorities:

  • Close the global ambition gap, staying as close as possible to 1.5°C.
  • Remain a leader in climate action and stand shoulder to shoulder with the most vulnerable, pushing for a better access to finance.
  • Show that the Paris Agreement is fit for purpose and initiate a process for improving the efficiency and the effectiveness of the UNFCCC regime.
  • Continue to have science underpin everything we do.

He stressed that the EU would do its part, calling on all other G20 members to step up to cut emissions and mobilise finance.

During the visit, he outlined these priorities during a press conference with local and foreign media, a trilateral meeting with Australia and Türkiye, and bilateral discussions with representatives from Fiji, India, Singapore, New Zealand, and Indonesia.
